Founders Stories 05 | Ally Palmer, Nutmeg

When and where did you launch Nutmeg?

Our first issue was September 2016 with a launch party at The Signet Library in Edinburgh.

Who are the founders of Nutmeg and what are their day to day roles now?

I (Ally Palmer) am the founder. I'm also the publisher and designer of Nutmeg. I was editor for the early issues before Daniel Gray became more involved and took over that role.

What was your motivation for starting Nutmeg?

At the time there was a few indie football magazines we really liked, but not a huge array (Eight by Eight, Soccer Bible, Howler were a few we admired at the time), and there wasn’t really anyone looking to own the football/travel space. We were getting more and more disillusioned with how disposable and fast-paced football journalism was becoming, so we set out to create something with real longevity, something collectible.

Do you have a favourite piece of content from your issues published to date? Why is it your favourite?

We’ve had two articles from Neil Forsyth of Guilt / The Gold fame that were both very personal and quite brilliant articles about his team Dundee United. One that looked at Ralph Milne’s life and the other about their legendary manager Jim McLean.

What would be your bucket list story/interview/profile/event to cover?

It’s actually happening soon! One of our writers Scott Fleming covered the Championship 2022/23 season over four issues which we then turned into a special ‘Nutmeg Gazette’ called ‘Dugmeat Days’. For the current season he suggested covering the same team - a kind of documentary in print - and the decision was that it would be about Ayr United which is Ally’s own team.

What do your 2024 plans look like? Are there any projects you are especially excited about?

We’ve just launched a Substack which is putting out original content three times a week. This is our first venture into digital-only content and includes My Sporting Hero podcasts, player columns, the Slow Match Report and The Nutmeg Mysteries. We're also doing a photo essay book with Back Page Press that celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Scottish Cup.

Finally, what other sports media do you consume for inspiration and enjoyment?

As mentioned above The Blizzard was always an inspiration but it's great to see so many independent football publications springing. Glory in particular launched at the same time as us and although very more visually led it's a fantastic publication.
